Spring is here. It is Easter and we might get rain for the sunrise service but rain is good! Time to plant some early risers like spinach and arugula. When we cleared away some of the winter covering of eel grass, we saw the kale or chard had come back. Alleluia!

These were taken on the summer solstice, just before our first harvest. We've had a cool and damp spring but the spinach and radishes don't seem to mind.

Sometimes during the week the garden seems pretty quiet but if you stick around to do a little weeding, it is likely someone will come and join you.

There have been sightings! Here are some photos to prove it. For an idea of scale, that rope in the photo is a piece of twine.

On Saturday, April 30th, 3 energetic guys, Rob Peters, Tyler Nunn and Larry Graham arrived bright and early on that foggy morning to build the wooden structure for our raised bed garden. As the day progressed, the sun began shining and the structure took shape. In the afternoon, Richard and Ben Derible provided helping hands to prepare the bed "floor" to receive the garden soil that was to arrive the next week.

May 8, after the 9:15 service, Reverend Steve Laskey blessed the garden, the seeds and the seedlings. We planted spinach, lettuce, and chard that day.

This weekend we will be planting the seeds of a few vegetables that don't mind the cooler weather, directly into the garden. Meanwhile in the sunniest window of the youth room, the Sunday school is growing broccoli, cucumber, green onions and tomatoes. We hope to transplant them in to the garden later in May.

Tuesday May 3rd the soil was dumped on the driveway. By Wednesday morning it was gone from the driveway and the raised bed was full of lovely soil and compost. These photos tell the story of what happened that day and evening.

During the past several weeks, the area behind the Columbarium has been magically transformed into a raised bed vegetable garden ready for planting! Sunday, May 10, the Sunday School will begin the planting! Many folks have been involved - it's been a huge group effort - thanks to everyone for making this happen, particularly our sexton, who has been involved every step of the way!
